Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing helps you prepare for labour and birth using evidence based tools and techniques, such as relaxation, breathing techniques and visualisation. It focuses on the mind-body connection. It is designed to release fear and anxiety about birth, and learn how to stay calm during the intensity of labour - however your birth goes on the day.
What is the "hypno" part about?
This is the part that can put people off or make people have certain preconceptions of hypnobirthing. It stands for "hypnosis", but don't worry, I promise I'm not going to be putting anyone into a trance or using mind control! It is simply a state of deep relaxation, like when we are day dreaming or just about to drift off to sleep.
Who is hypnobirthing for?
Everyone, and all births! For first time parents, this can help them feel prepared and approach birth with confidence. It is espeically helpful to anyone experiencing fear or anxiety about giving birth. And for those who have experienced a previous traumatic birth, this can help unpick some of those fears and help prepare for a more positive experience.
Does it work?
Yes! Research shows that hypnobirthing has been linked to shorter labour, reduced need for medical pain relief, fewer interventions, optimising the essential hormones for birth, and less fear and anxiety around birth. Data collected by Wolverhampton NHS Trust showed that 80% of hypnobirthing mothers achieved a straight forward, unassisted birth.
Do I need to do an NCT course or other antenatal class as well?
No - you don't need to do both. My full 8–10 hour hypnobirthing course is a complete antenatal education program. It covers everything you need to know about the physiology of labour, birth preparation, pain management tools, hospital procedures, interventions, and birth preferences.
What if I've already booked onto an NCT course?
That is absolutely fine - they actually complement each other brilliantly! Many of my clients choose to do both. They use their NCT course for general group education and meeting other local parents, and book my 1:1 Hypnobirthing Course (or 4-Hour Intensive) to get the deep mindset work, practical breathing techniques, bespoke birth planning, and personalized 1:1 support that standard group classes don't offer.
Can partners attend?
Absolutely! In fact, partners are encouraged to join. They’ll learn how to support you during labour and become an active part of the birth process.
